SASKATOON (COMP) The Slingers jumped to an early 22-point lead before the Probacks had even thought about playing their opening game of the 2018 season last night. The high flying Bermuda Triangle offense, lead by Jace Muggli, had the Probacks stumped for the better part of the first half. The first three possessions all ended in a Slinger major.
"We wanted to send a message to the league. It was imperative that we started the game the way we knew we could," added Slinger returning star Kyle McGinnes who missed all of last season travelling the world.
The Probacks experience in Quarterback Drew Burko, who recently returned from playing professional football in Europe, allowed the 6'3'' pivot and his team to add a score before the half and get some much needed life back into the game.
"We've been away from each other for quite some time and it was tough getting a rhythm going for most of the game. We're going to work hard this week and get back to playing Proback style football," Burko said. "But at the end of the day, experience or no experience, you've got to execute."
The Probacks still had a chance in this game during their final drive as they were only down two scores facing a third and goal situation with a minute to play. Drew Burko lobbed a pass up for standout receiver Kit Hillis, but was picked off by Taylor Rehn of the Slingers. Slingers opted to down the ball with under a minute remaining and held on for a 36-20 opening night win.
"It felt good to get that win. I feel like this is something we can build from. We played well, but not great. We want greatness." Added defensive rush Brad "Painer" Chiasson.
